A 21-year-old man died after his speeding scooter rammed the side railing and threw him off the flyover in Northwest Delhi’s Mukarba Chowk on Monday. Sahil Taneja, who was riding the scooter, died on the spot while the pillion rider Pradeep sustained injuries, police said.

The incident happened around 7 am on Monday. A passerby spotted the injured men and made a PCR call. A senior police officer said,“Our team rushed to the spot and found one of the men near the railing while the other was found 35 feet down lying in a pool of blood. Both were rushed to Saroj Hospital. While Sahil was declared dead on arrival,Pradeep was admitted for treatment.”

Police said Sahil and Pradeep had left for Murthal near Sonepat around 4 am and were returning to Delhi when the incident happened. “Sahil was riding the Honda Activa at a high speed. When he tried to take a sharp turn at the Mukarba Chowk turn near the Karnal bypass,he lost control of the scooter and it hit the railing of the flyover. The scooter was going at such a speed that as soon as it hit the railing,Sahil was thrown off the flyover. The vehicle was completely damaged due to the impact. Pradeep fell near the railing and was saved,” the officer said. He added that both riders were wearing helmets.

Sahil is survived by his parents and two elder brothers. Speaking to Newsline,Om Prakash,Sahil’s relative, said,“He woke up around 4 am and told his family that he was going with his friend Pradeep to have breakfast at Murthal. Around 7.30 am we received a call from his friends informing us about the accident. They told us that Sahil and Pradeep have been admitted to the hospital and were seriously injured. We rushed to the hospital only to find Sahil dead.”

Sahil, the youngest of three brothers, was pursuing his graduation through correspondence and had recently joined his father’s property business at Rani Bagh after quitting his job in Okhla.

Sahil reportedly was racing two of his friends who were on another motorbike and this was what caused him to lose control of the vehicle. Police, however, denied the report. “Two of the victims’ friends were on another bike but whether they were racing is not yet clear. The accident cell is investigating the case,” a police officer said.
