South corpn doubles parking rates

Upadhyay will, however, continue to be a councillor and a member of the Standing Committee .

The South Municipal Corporation is set to increase parking rates in the city after over 30 years. The Standing Committee on Thursday approved a hundred per cent increase in rates in all corporation-approved sites in the capital.

In his last decision as Standing Committee Chairperson, Satish Upadhyay approved Rs 20 as standard parking rate and fixed a charge of Rs 100 for parking for over five hours.

The new rates will be applicable only after it is approved in the House meeting scheduled to take place next month. Leader of the House Subhash Arya said, “The L-G had said it should be increased to Rs 100 to discourage illegal parking, but we decided to keep it to a minimum,” he said.

Signing off from his position as South corporation Standing Committee chairman, Upadhyay said that it was unfair to the corporation that he had to divide his time between the BJP office and the Civic Centre. “As the state unit president of the BJP, my responsibilities are greater and ever since my appointment, I have not been able to give the corporation the time it deserves,” he said.

Upadhyay will, however, continue to be a councillor and a member of the Standing Committee .
