Taking on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party for raising questions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational qualifications, Delhi L-G VK Saxena said that degrees were mere receipts of money spent on education and that the behaviour of a few people proved they “remain uneducated despite having an IIT degree”.
Saxena was speaking to reporters on Sunday morning when he went to take stock of the progress on cleaning the Wazirabad drain as part of the government’s Clean Yamuna project. When asked about Kejriwal’s statement in Delhi Assembly that the nation needs an educated Prime Minister, Saxena said, “Haan, maine ya banyan suna hai jo mananiya mukhyamantri ji ne kuch samay pehle Vidhan Sabha main diya tha. Main kehna chahunga ki kabhi bhi kisi ko apni degree pe guman nahi hona chahiye. Kyunki degreeyan toh padhai ke Kharch ki raseedein Hoti hain. Aur shikshsha vahi hai jo aapka gayan aur aapka vyavhaar darshata hai. (Yes, I have heard the statement of the CM made in Vidhan Sabha. No one should be boastful about their degree because degrees are just receipts of the money spent on studies. Education is reflected in your knowledge and behaviour).”
“Inn kuch dino main maine dekha hai kiss tareeke ka vyavhaar ho raha hai. Aur main ye keh sakta hoon ki ab ye baat bhi prove ho gayee ki kuch log IIT se degree lene ke bavajood bhi ashikshit reh jaate hain. (In the past few days, I have seen how people have behaved and it has been proved that some people remain uneducated despite having a degree from IIT),” Saxena added.
AAP, which has stepped up its attack over the issue, has been running a campaign asking for an “educated PM for the nation’s well-being”.
The BJP shot back, with party leaders pointing out that the PM’s degrees had been shared publicly in a press conference in the past and the fresh allegations had no merit.
Last month, the Gujarat High Court set aside an order of the Central Information Commission that had directed the Gujarat University to “search for information regarding” Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degrees. The court also imposed a cost of Rs 25,000 on Kejriwal, who had requested information on Modi’s degrees under the RTI Act.
Meanwhile, AAP started a campaign called ‘Show your degree’ wherein AAP minister Atishi showed her undergraduate degree from Delhi University and post-graduation degrees from Oxford University.
“I want to ask all leaders, especially BJP leaders, to show their degrees to people,” she said at a press conference.
