Taking on Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and AAP for raising questions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational qualifications, L-G VK Saxena Sunday said degrees were mere receipts of money spent on studies.

Taking a dig at Kejriwal, he also said the behaviour of a few proved that some people remain uneducated despite having a degree from IIT. Saxena was speaking to the media while taking stock of progress on cleaning Wazirabad drain as part of the government’s Clean Yamuna project. He also visited Sur Ghat.

When asked about Kejriwal’s statement in the Delhi Assembly that the nation needs an educated PM, Saxena said, “Kabhi bhi kisi ko apni degree pe guman nahi hona chahiye. Kyunki degreeyan toh padhai ke kharch ki raseedein hoti hain. Aur shiksha vahi hai jo aapka gyan aur aapka vyavhaar darshata hai… ab ye baat bhi prove ho gayi ki kuchh log IIT se degree lene ke bavajood bhi ashikshit reh jaate hain. (No one should be boastful about their degree because they are just receipts of money spent on studies… Education is reflected in knowledge and behaviour… it has been proved that some people remain uneducated despite having a degree from IIT).”

AAP leaders asked the L-G if this was the case, why he insisted on educated people to run his secretariat. The AAP has been running a campaign asking for an “educated PM for the nation’s well-being”, and another asking leaders to show their degrees. The BJP has retaliated by pointing out that the PM’s degrees had been shared publicly in a press conference in the past and that the issue being raised had no merit.

Meanwhile, Water Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj accused Saxena of claiming credit for the work done by the city government to clean the Yamuna.

Saxena, during his visit, said, “We are not working for credit but to give clean Yamuna to people.”

In a press conference, Bharadwaj said projects to clean the river were started before Saxena was appointed the L-G. He said, “Delhi government’s initiative began in 2017 where Ghoga drain was treated. The Centre issued a letter recommending other states to learn from Delhi… water in Rajokri drain was treated in 2017 and Delhi government received an award from Centre.”

He said, “Now that the government and its departments are doing their work successfully, the L-G goes to these places and tries to take credit… He should be aware he has no financial powers to allocate a rupee for any project as Constitution doesn’t allow him.”
