This Diwali, senior citizens were in for a surprise when they found the police at their doorstep. Sweets in hand, beat constables of the North district visited the houses of the elderly. The constables also clicked selfies with the elderly and uploaded the photos on social media.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma said beat constables were asked to visit the houses of registered senior citizens in their respective areas.
“The drive was conducted to assure senior citizens that they are not alone… and that police are with them. They too welcomed our move,” he said. “There are 1,100 registered senior citizens in our district’s senior citizen cell. In all, the policemen visited 100 houses and distributed sweets,” said the DCP, adding that such drives will be held again.
North district has 13 police stations and 150 beat constables. Every station is divided into several beats, which are looked after by constables.
Ashok Jain (67), who welcomed a constable visitor, said, “It was very good. I felt confident when the policeman came to my house on Diwali. He came with sweets and assured me that he is with me.” Jain lives alone in Sadar Bazar area. He works as a councillor with the Delhi Legal Services Authority.
Another senior citizen who lives in Gulabi Bagh, Inder Raj Kapoor, said the constable who visited him well-mannered. “I had a very good interaction with him Wednesday night… He stayed for 15 minutes; he assured us that he would always come to our help if we are ever in distress,” said Kapoor.
Police said they have conducted similar drives for senior citizens. The South district police had launched the ‘Police At Your Doorstep’ initiative, in which senior officers met the elderly during their morning walks to discuss any problems they faced.
