“On enquiry, we found that the boy attempted suicide after an argument with his elder sister,” Bhisham Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police, North West, said. Adarsh’s sister allegedly spotted him playing games on her mobile phone. “She scolded him for playing games and not paying attention to his studies,” Singh said.

Adarsh was rushed to a hospital but died during treatment, the police said.

A case was registered under Section 194 (Police to enquire and report on suicide) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Following a post-mortem examination, Adarsh’s body was handed over to the family, the police said.

Recent data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) showed that Delhi had the highest number of suicides among 53 Indian cities in 2023, with 3,131 cases. The number accounts for 12 per cent of the total suicides in all Indian cities. Of the 3,131 deaths, 954 — about one third of the total — were attributed to ‘family problems’, as per the data.
