The long-pending promise of constructing low-cost housing for residents of 675 slum clusters in Delhi is expected to get priority this year with the Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, who is also the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) chairperson, kicking the project into top gear.
L-G House officials said the plan for all the colonies will be processed over the coming weeks.
Blaming the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) and the Delhi government for alleged failure to provide basic services in slums, the office of the L-G said that DDA had undertaken the task of in-situ rehabilitation, or rehabilitation within 5 kilometres, of the present location.
According to a statement, a provision of Rs 62 crore and Rs 98 crore has been made in budget estimates and revised estimates for the project, respectively.
It further said that 1,675 slum dwellers from Jailorwala Bagh and 2,800 from Kathputli Colony JJ clusters will be handed over the keys to their houses under the in-situ scheme soon.
Saxena completed two years in office on May 26.
For the third year of his tenure, Saxena’s focus is going to be on making provisions of all civic amenities like roads, drainage, clean drinking water, sewerage, sanitation and cleanliness in all unauthorised colonies, his office said. “The two projects that have been stalled are the stay on the cleaning of Yamuna and disposal of garbage. We have approached the Supreme Court for both,” an official said.
Also on the list of projects is planting 10 lakh tulip bulbs across the city along with revamp and rejuvenation of Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid, Fatehpuri Masjid area, the Bhuli Bhatyari Complex, Sadar Bazar Complex, and the Nizamuddin area.
