Sanaa beats Anastasia,enters round two

Delhi’s Sanaa Bhambri put in an excellent display of tennis on a rainy day in Pune,defeating Japan’s Anastasia Malhotra 6-0 6-4 in the first round of the $50,000 ITF tournament on Monday.

After being dealt a bagel in the opening set,Anastasia put up a fight in the second,but eventually lost out in straight sets.

In other first-round matches,second-seeded Masa Zec-Peskiric and sixth-seeded Rika Fujiwara of Japan also scored lopsided wins to move into the second round. Zec-Peskiric outserved Hae-Sung Kim of Korea 6-3 6-4,while Fujiwara blanked junior compatriot Miki Miyamura 6-2 6-1. The final round of the qualifiers was also played on Monday,and Rishika Sunkara and Shivika Burman were the two Indians who made it to the main draw. Israel’s Chen Astrogo and Serbian Tamara Curovic also won their final-round qualifiers.

Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn is the top seed and plays Rushmi Chakravarthi first up.
