The body of a 55-year-old man was found hanging from a tree near Paschimabad building on the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus, said police on Tuesday, adding that he allegedly died by suicide.
Police said the deceased — identified as Vijay — worked as a ‘safai karamchari’ at the university on a private contract. We have launched an investigation to ascertain the reason behind the alleged suicide, they added.
Expressing condolences, JNU Registrar Professor Ravikesh said in a statement: “The university is deeply saddened by the loss of one of the outsourced staff yesterday (Monday) and extends heartfelt condolences to his family members. In light of this tragedy, the university is committed to providing support to the family during this difficult time. The salary of the deceased employee was being paid by the vendor concerned regularly.”
“In view of this unfortunate incident, the university has directed the vendor concerned to extend all necessary help, including any ex-gratia payment, to the family of the deceased employee on an urgent basis,” he added.
“Police have started an investigation into the incident. We request everyone to remain vigilant and also refrain from spreading unverified information. Further, we request all to respect the privacy and dignity of the deceased and his family during this difficult time,” the university said in the statement.
A senior police officer, meanwhile, said that the spot was inspected and proceedings under Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) Section 174 have been initiated. Further enquiry is underway, the officer added.
