Running from police,auto thief robs,‘attacks’ 72-year-old

At 2 pm on Saturday,the police came to Surya Apartments in Rohini looking for the man. The police said he was travelling in a car and was stopped at the picket outside the society. When he was asked to show the documents of the car,he left the vehicle and fled into the society. The police then alerted the residents there.

The victim reportedly told the police that she was sleeping in the house around 3 pm,while her husband Didar Singh (75) was playing cards in the lawn opposite their first-floor house. “I usually don’t lock the door during the day,” said Singh. Kaur woke up around 4 pm and found a man hiding behind the door of the other bedroom of the house.

“The man,seemingly in his 20s and clad in a white tracksuit,was trying on my sarees. I realised later that he was probably doing that to evade the police. When I shouted for help,he picked up a sword lying in the room and started hitting me. I fell,after which he dragged me to the bathroom and locked me in,” said Kaur. She then bolted the door from inside and shouted for help through the window.

The thief,meanwhile,fled,taking with him a few silver articles,two gold pendants,two rings,a few sarees and a Mont Blanc pen. The police said the man jumped the society’s boundary wall and fled in an auto.

The police have found his cap,which has been sent for forensic examination.
