Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjit Singh G K and his four associates were reportedly asked to remove their turbans at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport on Tuesday

Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjit Singh G K and his four associates were reportedly asked to remove their turbans at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport on Tuesday. The delegation refused to do so.

The delegation, including Paramjit Singh (Rana),Gurvinder Pal Singh,Puneet Singh Chandhok and Gurbachan Singh Cheema, requested the airport security to manually scan the turbans with metal detectors. But the security officials did not agree to this.

They were on their way to Dubai after observing the ‘International Sikh Dastar (Turban) Awareness Day’ at the invitation of Sikh Channel (UK) on August 3 at Cremona in Italy. The delegation is currently waiting in Rome and the Indian Embassy there looking into the matter.

The security officials allegedly told the delegates that if they did not remove their turbans, they would not be allowed to board the aircraft to Dubai. “The security officer told the delegates that they would have to remove their hats and individually go to a private room where they would be physically frisked,” a DSGMC official claimed.

Following this, the Indian Embassy in Rome reportedly intervened but their efforts proved to be unsuccessful. “The India ambassador in Rome was personally monitoring the situation,” said a DSGMC official.
