Citing examples ranging from hosting the G20 Summit to infrastructure projects of national importance, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, in his Republic Day address on Friday, said both the Central and Delhi governments were making sustained efforts to develop the capital into a world-class and inclusive city.
Saxena greeted people on the occasion and paid tribute to the founders of the Constitution and security personnel who laid down their lives to protect the sovereignty and integrity of the country.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also extended greetings to citizens. In a post on X, he said, “Best wishes to all the countrymen on the 75th Republic Day. Let us all together take an oath to protect our Constitution and strengthen our great democracy.”

Highlighting various achievements over the last year, Saxena said: “2023 was a very important year for our country as well as the national capital. This year, for the first time, India hosted the respected G20 Summit…”
The L-G lauded agencies including the DDA, PWD, NDMC, MCD, and Delhi Police among others, their employees, workers, and the people of the NCR for successfully partnering to get Delhi ready to be able to successfully host the Summit.
Over the last year, he said, several significant infrastructural projects had been executed to transform the face of Delhi; these included two world-class auditoriums – the Bharat Mandapam and Yashobhoomi – which had been inaugurated.
He added that the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) between Meerut and Delhi had begun operations and work was in progress on the Delhi-Alwar and Delhi-Panipat corridors of the project. “Delhi has modernised its public transport system. I am proud to inform you that by 2015, 85% of the public transport buses will be electric in Delhi. That is a big achievement on the global level,” he said, adding that the Centre had extended special financial assistance under the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) scheme.
The government, Saxena said, was committed to giving top priority to health services and making them available to the people; efforts were being made to bring inclusive development to all sections of society, he added, citing the example of 72 lakh beneficiaries receiving subsidised foodgrains from fair-price shops.
He also said the government was committed to tackling air and water pollution and conservation of the Yamuna.
