Hours before his interim bail period ended, AAP chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal bid his family farewell and visited Raj Ghat, Hanuman Mandir in Connaught Place, and the party’s office at ITO before heading to Tihar jail to surrender on Sunday.

Kejriwal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in the excise policy case, was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on May 10 till June 1 to campaign for the Lok Sabha polls.

His wife, Sunita Kejriwal, accompanied him to Raj Ghat where they paid tribute at Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial and then to Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place where they offered prayers. During the CM’s 51-day jail stint, Sunita had acted as a bridge between the CM and the party. She also took an active part in the first INDIA bloc rally in Delhi and held roadshows for AAP candidates.

The CM was also accompanied by his Cabinet and senior leaders to Raj Ghat — Atishi, Gopal Rai, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Kailash Gahlot, Imran Hussain; Rajya Sabha MPs Sanjay Singh, Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, N D Gupta; Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Assembly Rakhi Birla and MCD in-charge Durgesh Pathak. Punjab ministers Aman Arora, Balbir Singh, Kultar Singh Sandhwan, Harpal Singh Cheema, and other AAP MLAs from both Delhi and Punjab.

Around the same time, Delhi BJP leaders, including president Virendra Sachdeva, along with workers blocked the passage of the CM’s cavalcade by sitting in protest at the Rajghat traffic intersection. They were later detained by police before being released an hour later.

The CM reached the AAP headquarters at 4 pm where he addressed MLAs and workers amid slogans of ‘Inquilab Zindabad’, ‘Kejriwal Zindabad’ and ‘Modi-Shah Murdabad’.

At 5.10 pm, he surrendered at Tihar. Along with his wife and children, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and other leaders accompanied the CM to the prison gates.

Delhi AAP convener Gopal Rai said, “He gave us one message — continue the fight against dictatorship…”

According to party officials, Kejriwal also held a meeting with members of the Political Affairs Committee at his house during which Mann and other senior leaders and ministers were present. Officials said the CM assigned responsibilities to them and urged them to stay united.
