A day after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi went to the postgraduate men’s hostel and interacted with students over lunch, Delhi University Saturday called the visit “unannounced and unauthorised”.
In a statement, the varsity said, “The university has taken serious note of the unannounced and unauthorised visit of Rahul Gandhi to PG men’s hostel. It has been brought to the notice of the university through hostel authorities and guards that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, along with many outsiders, made a sudden and unauthorised entry into the PG men’s hostel in the lunch hour on 05/05/2023 without any prior intimation. It disrupted the lunch of many inmates, who got annoyed due to the chaos created by his entry along with the mob accompanying him. This entry raises serious security concerns for hostel inmates and the leader. University authorities will take necessary steps to avoid such incidents of trespassing and will ensure this does not happen in future again.”
Reacting to the statement, the Indian National Teachers Congress (INTEC) said, “The university is unnecessarily making an issue out of nothing… Rahul Gandhi is a national leader and visited the hostel to interact with the youth and listen to their problems. As unemployment is on the rise and students are insecure about their future, they welcomed him and shared their concerns.
Had it been the Congress at the Centre, university authorities, including the V-C, would have waited for him with a red carpet.”
University court member Aman Kumar also condemned the attitude of the university and said: “Rahul Gandhi is an alumnus of St Stephens College, and the university should have welcomed his visit.”
