Union Home Minister Amit Shah slammed the Congress on Wednesday, alleging that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar was an attempt to “protect infiltrators” to win elections with their support. He maintained that the Narendra Modi government supported the process of “cleansing the electoral rolls”.

Shah was speaking at the Thyagaraj Stadium at the inauguration of 17 public welfare schemes of the Delhi government on the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 75th birthday. The event was also attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

The Congress held the 14-day and 1,300-km-long Voter Adhikar Yatra in Bihar to mark its protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls conducted by the Election Commission. Bihar goes to polls later this year.

Accusing the Congress of embarking on the ‘Ghuspaithiya Bachao’ (save infiltrators) yatra, Shah said, “Rahul Gandhi wants to win elections on the strength of infiltrators. The Opposition party wants infiltrators to remain in our voter list because it does not have faith in the people of this country and is seeking to win elections on the basis of infiltrators… BJP supports the

SIR exercise to cleanse the electoral rolls.”

At the event, Shah announced the inauguration of the Narela-Bawana waste-to-energy Plant in Delhi that will process 3,000 tonne of waste, alongside the Okhla plant handling 2,000 metric tonnes, to generate electricity. He said the Modi government is going to generate electricity from the massive garbage mounds that once shamed the people of Delhi.

“When Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, it was decided to celebrate his birthday as ‘Seva Pakhwada’. For the last 11 years, the entire nation has been celebrating Seva Pakhwada from September 17 to October 2,” Shah said.

Highlighting that the PM abrogated the provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution in his second term, Shah said in his

24 years of public service, Modi has never taken a day off, tirelessly working for the country’s development and the welfare of the poor.

Advising people to buy “swadeshi” items, he said, “From September 22, every item of daily use will have no or the minimum GST rate. I would advise all women to indulge in more shopping. There are 395 common items that will have zero or 5 per cent GST… “Purchase as much as you want, but ensure that you buy swadeshi items. It should be in our habit to promote swadeshi for a prosperous India.”

“The PM has never regarded power as a privilege, but as a medium of service, which is why his birthday is observed as Seva Pakhwada (a fortnight of service),” the CM said.
