PWD to replace warm vapour lights with timer-enabled smart LED lights to remove ‘dark spots’ in Delhi
According to officials, there are 2.8 lakh yellow sodium vapour streetlights across Delhi, and of these, 92,163 streetlights come under PWD

To eradicate ‘dark spots’ in the national capital and ensure the safety of commuters, especially women, the Public Works Department (PWD) has decided to replace all the existing yellow sodium vapour lights with timer-enabled smart LED lights, said officials. The astronomic timer, which can detect light and darkness, will automatically switch on the lights once it’s dark and switch them off again once the sun rises.
A senior PWD official said, “The initiative to install astronomical LED lights was started by the previous AAP-led government four-five years ago, on a pilot basis. However, the project was not taken forward. At present, there are around 5,000-6,000 such (LED) lights in Delhi. Most of these are in the New Delhi district. The department is now planning to replace all the yellow sodium lights with bright LED lights to remove dark spots from the city.”
Officials said that there will be an area-wise installation of LED lights. “The initiative will start with installation of lights in the North, North West and South West districts — where around 40,000 LED fittings will replace the old lights. Tenders will be floated soon. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 2 crore,” said the official.
According to officials, there are 2.8 lakh yellow sodium vapour streetlights across Delhi, and of these, 92,163 streetlights come under PWD. Among these 92,163 streetlights, 90,666 are functional, officials added.
“The yellow lights are a little dim and consume a lot of power. The smart LED lights, on the other hand, will help the department save electricity and energy,” said the official.
“We are working to fix the identified 1,697 dark spots in the city… around 400 have already been fixed and repaired… the remaining will be fixed by September end,” the official added.
