PWD to float tender for RTR flyover this month
PWD maintains that width of the service lane in front of these houses may have to be reduced.
Moving ahead with its proposal to build a parallel flyover alongside the single-carriageway flyover at Rao Tula Ram Marg, the Public Works Department (PWD) plans to float the tender for awarding work for the project by the month-end.
Work, however, will only start by September after the monsoon. “The foundation cannot be laid during the rainy season. The parallel flyover should be ready by 2016,” an official said.
“A design consultant has been appointed and the detailed project report should be ready by this week. The tender will be floated by May-end after a detailed cost estimate. It will take at least two-three months to award work after the tender is floated,” the official said.
The new flyover will take off from the existing Munirka flyover, run parallel to the single-carriageway flyover and descend near Niryat Bhawan.
The Delhi Urban Art Commission cleared the project, expected to end the traffic mess along the stretch, on August 27 last year.
The Rao Tula Ram Marg flyover, which serves as a key link to the airport and NH-8, has been the subject of considerable debate — and the reason for a traffic nightmare — ever since a handful of Palam Marg residents, whose bungalows face the road, opposed the takeover of a service lane outside their houses for the flyover project. The flyover was reduced to a single carriageway, resulting in a traffic bottleneck and daily chaos.
PWD maintains that width of the service lane in front of these houses may have to be reduced.
“The carriageway will have to be widened leading to reduced width of the service lane outside these houses,” a PWD official said.
“There have been several delays as a result of the continuous interference from these residents,” an official said.
The cost of constructing the parallel flyover will cost about Rs 211 crore. There is also a proposal to construct an underpass at Benito Juarez Marg and a skywalk near Dhaula Kuan at a cost of Rs 103 crore.
