Six Metro stations in the heart of New Delhi will be closed for most part of Sunday,an apparent precautionary step by the authorities following a call by India Against Corruption (IAC) to gherao residences of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and BJP president Nitin Gadkari over the coal block allocation issue.
A Delhi Metro spokesman said Central Secretariat,Udyog Bhawan,Patel Chowk,Race Course,Jor Bagh and Khan Market stations will remain closed from 8 am to 6 pm on Sunday. The stations fall near and close to the residences of the Prime Minister and Gadkari.
Interchange of passengers from Line 2 to Line 6 will, however,be allowed at Central Secretariat station. The spokesman said the decision was taken as per directions received from the Delhi Police the police spokesman declined comment.
Accusing Congress and BJP of being hand-in-glove on the coal block allocation issue, activist Arvind Kejriwal had announced the gherao of the residences of Singh and Gadkari.
Congress and BJP have got together to loot Rs 1.86 lakh crore in coal scam. (There will be) gherao of Prime Ministers and Nitin Gadkaris residences. Let us assemble at Jantar Mantar on August 26 (at) 10 am, Kejriwal tweeted.
The closure of six stations means that the Huda City Centre-Jahangirpuri line will be the most affected because five of the six stations fall on this line.
The Central Secretariat-Badarpur line too will be affected. Being a Sunday, authorities do not expect heavy rush. The stations are being shut as a precautionary measure.
Police and the CISF plan to deploy additional manpower at all the six Metro stations and along the road the protesters are expected to take from Jantar Mantar to the residences of the two leaders.
Reacting to the move to shut down the Metro during the time of the protest, the IAC in a statement said the government was scared and had instructed the Delhi Police to crackdown on the protesters.
The IAC said such moves would not deter them and only strengthen their resolve to protest.
