A 30-year-old man posing as a journalist was arrested for allegedly extorting money from a businessman in south Delhi’s Neb Sarai area. The accused was caught red-handed when he came with his associate to take the money from the businessman, police said. The matter came to the fore when a group of six persons, including two women, approached Fakruddin (40) who is into the shuttering business, at his flat in Jawahar Park, a week ago. Also present then was his wife and a relative. Sources said one of the persons was carrying a camera. The group introduced themselves as reporters working on a crime story. “The women approached Fakruddin, despite resistance from him and one of them took a video with the camera. A few minutes after the interaction, two persons said they came to do a sting operation on him, saying he ran a sex racket in his house. They also said they had recorded all the movements in their camera, which they would make public soon. They demanded Rs 3 lakh from Fakruddin’s family for not releasing the video,” said the police complaint. Fakruddin managed to give them Rs 1 lakh, police said. “The accused persons said they will come again to receive the remaining amount. On Sunday, two men from the group met Fakruddin and threatened him. They came again on Monday,” added the source. “This time Fakruddin, along with his neighbour, managed to catch one of the accused and informed the police,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Prem Nath. “A team from the local police station reached the spot and arrested the accused identified as Sanjeet, a native of Haryana’s Sonipat. During interrogation Sanjeet revealed the name of three other persons in the group,” said Prem Nath. Sources said it seemed like a racket they had been running for several months. Police said they were trying to establish the cases in which this group was involved. A manhunt was launched to nab the other accused. A case under sections 452 (trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 368 (wrongfully concealing or keeping in confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation), was registered at Neb Sarai police station and further probe was started.
