With its chief behind bars, Tuesday’s loss for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi is not just a reaffirmation that the people of the city will choose Prime Minister Modi over Arvind Kejriwal, but also a call to attention before the assembly polls in eight months.
On Wednesday, the party chose to focus on the three seats that it won in Punjab as well as the increase in its vote share.
“Despite the challenging circumstances, AAP’s concerted
efforts and Arvind Kejriwal ji’s extensive campaigning post-release on interim bail, contributed to the INDIA bloc’s commendable showing against the BJP,” said AAP National General Secretary (Organisation) Sandeep Pathak.
Speaking about Delhi, he said, “Delhi has a fixed pattern, it votes for the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections and for Arvind Kejriwal and other parties in the Vidhan Sabha elections. Delhi stuck to its electoral practice this time too, but the margin of his victory which used to be in lakhs has reduced considerably this time.
It was this pattern, however, that AAP was hoping to overturn this time.
“The result has made one thing clear, that AAP will not have it as easy in the assembly polls as it has had so far. The fact that our top leadership is in jail but we could not convince the voter to give us even one seat means we will have to start working for the assembly polls right away,” another leader said.
“It also means that work at the level of the Delhi government has to pick up pace, despite opposition from the L-G because we will be fighting two terms worth of anti-incumbency,” the leader added.
Senior party leaders also ruled out the possibility of an alliance with the Congress in Delhi polls.
