Poll body starts drive to make sure all voters are on the list

Delhi’s voting population, according to its CEO, is now 1.3 crore.

With the capital expected to go to polls next month, the Delhi Election Commission is looking at getting the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programmes to not only getting people registered as voters but also at getting registered voters to ensure their names appear on the electoral rolls.

On January 3, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Chandra Bhushan Kumar and senior officers in his team exchanged notes with a two-member team from the Election Commission in Maharashtra, to discuss various measures to encourage registered voters to check that their names are on the electoral rolls. This, the CEO, said would encourage voters to become “vigilant citizens”.

The commission on Monday announced the addition of 1.59 lakh voters to its electoral rolls at the end of a summary revision of the rolls started by the Delhi Election Commission on October 15.

Delhi’s voting population, according to its CEO, is now 1.3 crore.

“So far, we have had good results in getting a higher voter enrolment. But in Maharashtra, before the Assembly elections in October, the Election Commission was successful in getting people to come forward and check that their names are on the rolls. Having a voter ID card is not sufficient. Citizens must ensure that their names are on the rolls,” a senior Delhi EC officer said.

In the coming week, the CEO’s office has proposed to have camps at all 11,763 polling stations across 2,527 buildings in Delhi, where names of registered voters will be displayed and application forms will be made available to those who do not find their name on the rolls.

Kumar said based on the 2011 Census, the projected population of Delhi is 1.86 crore and the electoral-population (EP) ratio is 70.02 per cent.
