Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar has directed all policemen, through an order,to note down the email address, mobile phone number, postal address of the person when he or she files a complaint – and, most importantly, ask if he/she would like to be updated about the progress of the case.

The order says it is the duty of the investigating officer to complete the paraphernalia while a complaint or FIR is being filed.

In cases where a person does not have a phone or Internet connection, the area’s assistant commissioner of police (ACP) must ensure all investigations officers are present in police stations between 4 pm and 6 pm to inform the complainant about his or her case.

“In case an officer is on leave or on outstation duty,an inspector should have the information available for sharing with the complainant,” the order says.

The police chief said the new system, called Aapka Update, would improve accountabilty. “If the police officer concerned fails to give any update, the complainant can approach the DCP or other senior officers. Action will be taken against guilty officers,” he said.

“Information that does not hamper investigation will be shared with the complainant via email,SMS or whatever mode he or she prefers. This will ensure transparency,” he said.
