Outage at South Delhi institutes 28 hrs & going

Two premier educational institutes on Asaf Ali Marg,Indian Institute of Mass Communication and the Indian Council of Social Sciences Research, have been without power for over 28 hours.

Two premier educational institutes on Asaf Ali Marg,Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) and the Indian Council of Social Sciences Research (ICSSR),have been without power for over 28 hours.

“The power went off at 5.25 pm on Sunday. We began calling BSES when electricity was not restored for a few hours and they kept assuring us that it would be restored ‘as soon as possible’,” Anand Pradhan, warden of one of the hostels at IIMC,said late Monday evening.

Pradhan said IIMC sent one of the institute’s junior engineers to the local BSES office on Monday morning. “But once again we were told that there was some technical glitch and it would be sorted out by mid-afternoon.”

Worse,“BSES officials who gave us assurances are not answering our calls now”,he said.

Officials at ICSSR could not be contacted but a research scholar said there was no power in the hostel there, too.

A BSES official said the underground cable in the area had developed a “major fault” and that the discom was repairing it. “Power should be restored any minute now,” the official said. “This is a single source connection, which means power cannot be routed through a back-up when it develops a fault. We have replaced the damaged portion of the cable.”
