Out to catch robbers,man falls to their bullet

One man died and another suffered injuries after they tried to catch some burglars who had targeted a house in Palam area of Southwest Delhi.

One man died and another suffered injuries after they tried to catch some burglars who had targeted a house in Palam area of Southwest Delhi.

Harish Kumar (33),who worked as a driver,died in the attack. Rishi Chauhan (28) was injured.

According to the police,at least three men had broken into the house of a senior citizen in Indra Park,Sagar Pur,in Palam Gaon. The call about the attack came in around 2.30 pm. “The house was locked as its occupants were not at home,” a police officer said. It had been empty for several months. “When the assailants entered,breaking the lock,one of the neighbours informed his tenant,Rishi Chauhan.” Chauhan woke up Kumar,another neighbour,and the two tried to find where the break-in had occurred.

Realising that the neighbours had been alerted,the burglars — who were yet to rob the house — tried to escape. Kumar and Chauhan,who had located the burglars by then,gave chase. “They caught up with two of the burglars near street number 5,but one of them opened fire,” the officer said. Kumar was hit near the shoulder. Another bullet brushed past Chauhan’s stomach. In his statement to the police,Chauhan said: “Before Harish and me could gather that they were carrying weapons,one of them shot at us.”

As the men collapsed,the assailants managed to escape. The locals,who had gathered by then,called in the police and the injured men were taken to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. Chauhan was released after first aid,but Kumar succumbed to his injury.

The police officers said cases of burglary,attempt to murder and murder have been registered at the Palam police station and further investigations are on.

Harish used to work as a driver in a private company and is survived by his wife and two children. He was the only earning member of the family.

Kannan Jagdishan,Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) said: “No arrest has been made but we have some clues.” Jagdishan added that they have identified a few suspects. “Teams have been sent to for raids and we are hopeful of an arrest soon,” said a senior officer. They have taken help of locals — primarily Chauhan — to prepare sketches of the assailants.
