Since various calls by the Delhi administration to alert the Organising Committee (OC) on the need to enhance housekeeping and hygiene-related arrangements at the Games Village have fallen on deaf ears,Lieutenant- Governor Tejendra Khanna has entrusted 70 junior commissioned officers from the Rajya Sainik Board with the keys to the flats therein on behalf of the committee.
In a communication made to the GoM last month, the need for taking appropriate custodial action to establish ownership by locking the flats was highlighted, sources said. The issues relating to maintenance and cleanliness came up in the absence of such initiatives, which would have ensured strict supervision, they added.
Later,on the request of the OC,the Delhi administration gave the contract for cleaning and housekeeping to Indo-UK venture Global Excellence Lions Group, which is also in charge of the IGI Airport. On Tuesday,104 cleaning staffers from the Delhi administration,40 from ITDC and 15 from the Delhi government were seen hard at work. At least 50 trained officials from Raj Niwas were supervising cleaning works.
About seven senior Air Force officers, headed by Air Vice Marshal V K Dayalu, were supervising work relating to rectification, maintenance and cleaning.
The NDMC and MCD were working on the Villages exterior. And having finished cleaning up the Games Village, the municipalities have now been entrusted with clean-up projects at other venues also. As many as 500 workers from the Central Zone and hundred each from the other zones have been chosen from the MCD alone to clean up Games venues, starting Wednesday. According to an official, the Cabinet Secretary had entrusted the task to the civic agency after he found work done by workers at the Games Village to his satisfaction.
NDMC,on the other hand, began work on Tuesday itself. At least 45 workers were sent to the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium and 41 workers to the SP Mukherjee Swimming Complex for cleaning up the area. NDMC workers also fumigated the venues to prevent mosquitos from breeding and employed dog catchers to curb the canine menace there.
We are planning to hire more people on a temporary basis. We cannot send too many of our workers to the venues as we need people to clean and take care of our own areas, said a senior official.
As many as 250 NDMC workers were stationed at the Games Village on Tuesday. Most of the workers have been accredited and they can gain access to other Games venues. There are 3,000 rooms ready for habitation in all the towers. Of the 73 elevators,70 are in working condition, he added. There are three CWG venues in NDMC areas, including the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium,Dr SP Mukherjee Swimming Complex and Talkatora Stadium.
