Councillors of the North Municipal Corporation Monday took offence over a recent Delhi government radio advertisement which claims that the city is full of garbage.

The advertisement, voiced by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, marks the announcement of the Swacch Delhi Abhiyaan — a collaboration between the government, the MCDs and the Union Urban Development (UD) Ministry. Incidentally, Monday was the last day of the government’s latest sanitation drive.
In the advertisement, Kejriwal states, “Namaskar, main Arvind Kejriwal bol raha hun. Dilli mein charon taraf kitni gandagi hai na? Charon taraf kooda hi kooda hai. Dilli sarkar ne, dilli nagar nigam aur kendra sarkar ke saath milke, dilli ko saaf karne ka abhiyaan shuru kiya hai.” (Namaskar, this is Arvind Kejriwal. There is filth everywhere in Delhi, isn’t it? There is garbage everywhere. The Delhi government along with the municipal corporations and the Centre is launching a drive to clean Delhi.)

Members of the standing committee, especially those from the BJP, stated that if the government is going to “malign the corporation’s image… publicly then the MCD will not participate in any of their schemes”.

Councillor Rekha Gupta said, “If the government will neither give us credit for keeping the city clean, nor give us funds and resources to undertake our primary functions, why should we work with them?” Gupta added that Kejriwal should provide the crores he is spending on advertisements to the corporations instead.
Supporting her stance, Leader of the House Yogendra Chandolia said Kejriwal’s words are a disservice to thousands of sanitation workers, because of whose efforts the city’s kept clean.

“It has been conveyed to the mayor as well that the corporation will not participate in any schemes of the government if the CM does not acknowledge the corporation’s efforts,” Chandolia told The Indian Express.

The government launched the Swachh Delhi Abhiyaan on November 23 in the presence of UD minister M Venkaiah Naidu. The minister handed over a cheque of Rs 96.7 crore to Kejriwal, who issued orders to release the same amount to urban local bodies in the capital.
