Noida student sexual assault case: How the shirt he wore on day of the crime helped cops nab main accused

Last Tuesday, a six-year-old girl stepped out of her class at a Noida school. It was recess. That’s when a man working on the premises, dressed in his blue and white checked shirt and black pants, carrying a heap of sand on his head, chanced upon her. He took the girl to a secluded spot and allegedly touched her inappropriately. The girl managed to get away and ran to her class teacher and said, “It was a bad touch.”

Days later, on Saturday, police tracked down the accused, 28-year-old Kalu Thakur alias Amir, and arrested him from his home in Firozabad for allegedly molesting the child.
How did police know it was him? “He was wearing beige pants but the same shirt (as on the day of the incident). That’s how we found him,” said DCP (Gautam Buddh Nagar) Ram Badan Singh.
When the incident took place, police said the girl’s teacher had informed the principal and the school supervisor. However, school authorities — including the teacher — allegedly helped the suspect flee the spot instead of alerting the police, said officers.
The girl’s parents later filed a complaint, alleging that a labourer inappropriately touched their daughter. Police then arrested the principal, class teacher, supervisor, and contractor on September 5.
Police said during questioning, the contractor gave them details of the accused. Thakur, police said, worked as a daily wager and was living in Noida. After the incident, police said he fled to his village where he was hiding.
Police said they sent a team to his village and they found CCTV footage which showed him wearing the same shirt that he had on the day of the incident.
“A chargesheet has been filed against them. All four of them (not including Thakur) have been granted bail in this case,” said DCP Singh.
“It is suspected that the school authorities tried to cover up the incident allegedly to avoid the school being defamed publicly,” said a senior officer.
The girl’s father, in his complaint, said that the accused allegedly found his daughter outside the classroom. “He took her to a secluded area, where there were no CCTV cameras and touched my daughter inappropriately for nearly five minutes,” he alleged in the complaint.
Based on the complaint by the parents, Noida Police said they lodged a case under sections 263 (resistance or obstruction to lawful apprehension of another person) and 74 (assault or use of criminal force on woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
