No parking space available for public at new civic centre

Agency decided against public parking for security reasons.

Being a civic agency, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has to deal with public on a regular basis, with thousands of people visiting its office everyday. However, the newly-constructed civic centre headquarters of the MCD has no provision of parking for the common man.

Claiming that providing parking for public vehicles could pose a security threat to the civic centre, the MCD has decided to not have public parking. “We can not let public vehicles in the building despite the fact that we have space,as these could pose a security threat. We are planning to provide parking access for people visiting the headquarters at the nearby Ramlila grounds,” said Rajesh Prakash,Assistant District Commissioner (ADC) headquarters. Incidentally, the proposed ground for parking is located at a distance of almost one kilometre from the MCD headquarters.

According to Deep Mathur,Director Press and Information,MCD,the civic centre has a parking space of 2,500 cars. “There are vacant parking slots available to us,however, with half the building being rented out to the Income Tax department we think the remaining space will be occupied too,” Mathur claimed. He further added that considering today’s security situation they need to be more cautious while allowing access of vehicles to high-rise buildings as these could prove to be the targets for terror attacks.

However, the agency’s move hasn’t gone down well with the people visiting the civic centre. Dilbagh Singh,a businessman who had come from Tilak Nagar complained that despite the office deals with public, the civic authorities had not thought of the common man. “It is the public that is being harassed. The MCD should provide parking space to the common man as well,” he said.
