Over the past several months, the poor state of the much-touted pedestrianised 1.2-km-long stretch at Chandni Chowk has been a cause of inconvenience to shoppers and traders alike. Earlier this month, the High Court had also asked the Delhi government to ensure redevelopment work carried out in the market is continued and maintained.
On Tuesday, a war of words broke out between L-G VK Saxena and the AAP-Delhi government over the stretch.
After visiting the area, Saxena, in a series of posts on X, posted pictures and wrote: “Decrepit basic civic services, lacking sanitation, deplorable upkeep due to neglect over years and absence of essential coordination between departments/ agencies working in silos, has defeated the very purpose of pedestrianisation of the main thoroughfare.”
In another post, he said, “This apathy has converted this proud heritage of the National Capital into a disorganised nightmare for traffic, visitors, traders & devotees.”
Saxena said he has directed officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) to take up deep cleaning and repair of roads, footpaths and bollards.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government blamed the Centre saying that since the GNCTD Act was passed, it has no power to act against any officer.
“The Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation has developed and handed over all assets to the PWD for upkeep, maintenance and sanitation. Therefore, the PWD secretary is responsible for any lapses… After the GNCTD (Amendment) Act, the Delhi government has no power to take action against any officer. All power to take action is with the L-G,” said government officials.
It also said that if the L-G is unhappy with the work of the PWD, its secretary should be suspended with immediate effect.
Meanwhile, sources in PWD said that the contractors who look after the maintenance and cleanliness of the area have not paid due to fund crunch. “Contracts are yet to be renewed for the area,” said a source.
The L-G also directed police to address the issue of vagabonds and drug addicts in the area. “NSCB Marg between Chandni Chowk and Lal Qila has a serious problem of traffic congestion and traffic police were directed to resolve this problem,” he said.
“It was also directed to find ways for the utilisation of Sisganj parking to address the issues facing devotees and pilgrims and the parking problem in the area,” the L-G added.
