The University of Delhi has made the list of top five universities in the country by climbing from the sixth position last year to the fifth spot as the Ministry of Education announced the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings on Thursday. DU is right behind Jamia Millia Islamia, which has dropped from the third to the fourth spot in this year’s annual list, even as Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) retains the second position.

In the ‘overall category’, covering all the educational institutions in the country, IIT Delhi ranks fourth, JNU ninth, Jamia 13th, and DU 15th. DU also maintains its dominance in the colleges category — its colleges have grabbed the top five spots, and 10 spots in the list of top 20.

In its ninth edition last year, NIRF had introduced three categories — open universities, skill universities, and state-funded government universities. This year, the framework added a new “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” category and brought in major methodological changes. A negative marking system was introduced across select categories based on the number of retracted publications, while the elimination of self-citations at the institutional level, first applied in 2024, was continued this year.

The ranking framework evaluates institutions on five broad parameters — Teaching Learning and Resources (TLR ); Research and Professional Practice (RP); Graduation Outcome (GO); Outreach and Inclusivity (OI); and Perception (PR).
