Green Tribunal committee to probe MP Brij Bhushan’s illegal mining

The committee is required to submit an action taken report within two months.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has constituted a joint committee to look into allegations of illegal mining, and transportation, storage and sale of minor minerals against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

According to an order issued by the NGT’s Principal Bench Wednesday, the application was regarding illegal mining by Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in District Gonda, illegal transportation of the extracted minor minerals by over 700 overloaded trucks everyday, storage and illegal sale of about 20 lakh cubic metres minor mineral, and damage caused to Patparganj Bridge and road by overloaded trucks.”

The joint committee constituted by the Tribunal will comprise representatives of the Ministry of Environment, the Central Pollution Control Board, the National Mission for Clean Ganga, the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board, and the District Magistrate, Gonda. The NGT has directed the committee to meet within a week, visit the site, “verify the factual position and take appropriate remedial action.”

The committee has been asked to clarify the compliance with the Sustainable Sand Mining Management Guidelines, 2016, and the Enforcement and Monitoring Guidelines for Sand Mining, 2020, in addition to determining remediation of mined areas and “damage caused to river Saryu”.

The committee is required to submit an action taken report within two months.

The Tribunal had registered the application based on a letter petition received by post.
