Rename New Delhi railway station after Vajpayee, BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal urges minister Ashwini Vaishnaw
The letter came a week after Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta wrote to Vaishnaw requesting him to rename the Old Delhi railway station as the Maharaja Agrasen railway station.

BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal on Sunday requested that the New Delhi railway station be renamed as Atal Bihari Vajpayee railway station “in honour of one of India’s most revered statesmen and former Prime Minister”.
In a letter to Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Khandelwal, the MP for Chandni Chowk, wrote that the New Delhi railway station’s central location and prominence “make it a suitable site to be named after a national figure whose life and legacy continue to inspire millions”.
The letter came a week after Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta wrote to Vaishnaw requesting him to rename the Old Delhi railway station as the Maharaja Agrasen railway station.
Khandelwal wrote that major public institutions and transport hubs across the country are named after national icons, citing the examples of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai and the Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna metro station in Bengaluru. “Similarly, New Delhi — the heart of the nation — deserves to honour a leader of Vajpayee ji’s stature,” he wrote.
“Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee ji was a visionary leader who steered India into a new era of economic reform, infrastructure development, and global standing. His inclusive politics, dignified leadership, and commitment to democratic values earned him immense respect across the political spectrum and among the people of India,” Khandelwal wrote.
In the letter, the MP wrote that “Delhi was not only his political workplace but also a city that held deep emotional and cultural significance for him”.
“Renaming the New Delhi Railway Station in his memory would be a fitting tribute to his lifelong service to the nation and a gesture that resonates with public sentiment” and that “this renaming would not only pay homage to his immense contributions but also serve as a source of inspiration for future generations who pass through the capital,” Khandelwal further wrote.
