In a “modest” attempt at making helpless women self-reliant, New Delhi Municipal Corporation has set up a canteen under the council’s ‘Urja’ scheme which will be exclusively run by women, at Gole Market in Central Delhi.

“We were being approached by several unemployed women so we decided that we will launch a scheme in the form of a self-help group and make the women more independent,” NDMC Chairman Jalaj Shrivastava said.

NDMC has trained a group of women with the help of Delhi Institute of Hotel Management & Catering Technology, to prepare food which will then be sold through a tiffin service in the city.

The scheme draws from the Mumbai dabbawallas and has been launched on a pilot basis at the moment. Announced in April, the project was implemented last week with the first canteen being set up.

“Initially, 30 women have been engaged for the pilot project. Preference was given to widows and underprivileged women,” Shrivastava said. At present, the food will be served in NDMC offices and depending on the success of the programme it will be extended to other offices.

The women will prepare food for tiffins based on a simple menu and it will be sold at a price of Rs 40 per tiffin, the chairman said. “Hygiene, nutritional value, and lower price are the key highlights of this tiffin system and we will ensure that they are met,” Shrivastava said.

The cost of the project is estimated to be approximately Rs 10 lakh including the cost of mounting equipment and machinery for wrapping, packaging and other operational costs, the chairman said.
