NCW gives Lekhi 24 hrs to explain tweet

Lekhi has said that her account was misused.

The National Commission for Women has sought an explanation from BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi as to why she revealed part of the name of the former Tehelka journalist, allegedly raped by its former editor,on her Twitter account. Lekhi has said that her account was misused.

“We have asked her to explain the tweet where part of the woman’s name was reportedly revealed. She has 24 hours to reply,” NCW member Shameena Shafique said. The commission is still studying the report former Tehelka managing editor Shoma Chaudhury submitted on Wednesday.

The Congress said what Meenakshi Lekhi has done was punishable under the law. “It shows her as well as her party’s insensitiveness to atrocities on women. She is a senior leader,a woman, and above all she is a lawyer. What she has done is punishable under the law. It should be examined and law should take its course. Just saying that my account was hacked does not hold water,” Congress women’s wing president Shobha Oza said. “This shows how irresponsible she and her party can be. Now she is weaving a story that her phone was misused,” she added.

Meanwhile,BJP leader Vijay Jolly who was also issued a notice by the commission, missed his date to appear before them as he was summoned by Delhi Police at the same time. He will now appear on Monday.
