NCRB data: Delhi tops crowded prison list; most in for murder and rape

Delhi has overtaken states such as Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh when it comes to overcrowded jails after four years, according to Prison Statistics for 2022 released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

With 18,497 inmates lodged in space meant for 10,026, Delhi’s prison occupancy rate stood at 184.5% followed by Uttarakhand’s 183.3% which has 6,858 inmates against a capacity of 3,741 and Uttar Pradesh’s 179.9% where 1,21,609 are incarcerated despite space for 67,600 as on December 31, 2022.

In Delhi, over 90% of those incarcerated are undertrial prisoners (16,759), and over 62,000 of inmates were incarcerated till the end of last year.

Nine per cent of undertrials are convicts and most are serving sentences for murder and rape. While 572 of the total convicted inmates are serving time for murder; 378 have been convicted of rape; 103 for attempt to murder; 90 for dacoity; and 73 for robbery.

Among undertrial prisoners, 2,587 inmates are being tried for theft, 2,572 for murder and 2,401 for rape.

Of the undertrial prisoners, a majority — over 12,200 — have studied till at least class X up to post-graduation while over 1,200 of those convicted fall in the same category.

At 14, Delhi had the highest number of Central Jails and two women jails with a total capacity for 10,026 inmates — 9,346 male and 680 female. However, the actual population of inmates lodged in these was recorded at 17,814 male inmates, 670 female and 13 transgender prisoners.
