Murder staged as accident at Delhi Cantt railway station, 4 held
Police said that on March 9, they received information that a man’s mutilated body was found near a foot overbridge at the station

A murder was allegedly staged as an accident at Delhi Cantt Railway Station, which led to the arrest of three suspects and the apprehension of a minor, police said on Sunday. The fifth accused is still at large, officers said.
Police said that on March 9, they received information that a man’s mutilated body was found near a foot overbridge at the station. On reaching the scene, police found the severed body of an unidentified man lying on the railway tracks.
Despite inquiries by the Central Police District’s Crime Team, his identity could not be established immediately, and the body was shifted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem examination, said the police.
Four days later, the victim was identified by his family as 25-year-old Pankaj. The post-mortem report revealed three stab wounds and multiple assault marks on his back, contradicting the initial assumption of a railway accident, said officials.
Given the nature of the injuries, a case of murder was registered.
“During further investigation, it was revealed that on March 12, the deceased’s scooter was found abandoned in the area by his relatives, who then made a PCR call. The IO (investigating officer) attended the call and examined CCTV footage from the area. In the footage, four to five local men were seen assaulting the deceased by slapping and punching him,” said DCP (Railways) KPS Malhotra.
Based on this evidence, the suspects seen in the footage were apprehended, said police.
During questioning, they allegedly admitted to the crime, revealing they had attacked the victim with a wooden plank in a park. When Pankaj tried to escape by jumping over the park’s wall, the assailants allegedly chased him toward the railway tracks, where they stabbed
him and placed his body on the tracks.
The arrested suspects have been identified as a youth who works in a banquet hall; a delivery boy; and a man who works in an electroplating factory with his father. The fourth accused is a minor, said police.
Following their arrest, the accused were taken into two days of police custody, during which a plastic pipe allegedly used in the assault was recovered.
Efforts to apprehend another absconding accused are ongoing, said police.
According to the police, upon the expiry of their police custody remand, the three adults were produced before the Duty Metropolitan Magistrate and sent to judicial custody for 14 days, while the juvenile was produced before the court through video conferencing and remanded to an observation home.
