Months had passed since a 21-year-old teacher of a Delhi school left her job, but hardly did her “obsession” with the principal of that school — the woman she considered her mentor — fade, police said.
For this one-sided story, the feeling was not mutual, as for the principal, the woman was just someone she had mentored. But the teacher refused to give up.
To get the principal’s attention, she created fake IDs, convinced her students to spread the rumour that she had got cancer and used the students’ IDs to circulate morphed images showing her as an ailing patient. She also went on to spread the rumour of her death later from those accounts.
But nothing worked and earlier this month, she got to know why.
A police officer said, “The 21-year-old learnt that her mentor had allegedly bonded with another teacher of the same school. She then targeted that teacher by creating fake Instagram accounts in the latter’s name and uploading morphed images to malign her.”
The second teacher spotted her morphed photos being circulated online and approached the police on September 6 and filed a complaint. “A complaint was received from a resident of Delhi’s Azad Market, who works as a teacher in a Delhi school. She alleged that someone had created fake Instagram accounts in her name, and was uploading her morphed pictures, and sending follow requests to her students and colleagues to damage her reputation,” DCP (North) Raja Banthia said.
Police scanned the images, accounts and the linked email IDs, and zeroed in on the accused.
The accused woman was subsequently arrested from her residence, the police officer said.
“The accused initially posed as a victim of cyber fraud, claiming that fake IDs were created in her name as well. However, during questioning, she revealed that she had created the fake accounts, edited pictures of herself and the complainant, and circulated fabricated videos — all to gain the principal’s attention and sympathy,” the officer said.
