Even as the brazen case of daylight robbery inside the Pragati Maidan tunnel on Saturday has left many shocked, police said the accused chose the spot to execute the crime for two reasons: Continuous mobility and lack of mobile connectivity inside. Senior police officers said due to lack of signal, it is difficult for anyone to make a PCR call from inside the tunnel. Besides, the accused were cognizant of the fact that vehicles rarely stop inside the tunnel due to which there was little chance of being stopped by other commuters, said an official. Seven persons have been arrested for allegedly robbing a delivery agent and his associate of around Rs 5 lakh, officers said. Police said the accused have been identified as Usman, Anuj, Kuldeep, Irfan, Sumit, Amit and Pradeep who were arrested after raids in Delhi, Haryana and UP. Police said it was allegedly Sumit's idea to rob a businessman to fetch “easy money”. Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav said that Usman had borrowed loans from several banks and lost money in IPL gambling. “He was well aware of business firms in Chandni Chowk and knew what transactions were carried out by businessmen there and where any consignment of money was being transported.he provided the crucial inputs and identified the targets,” said Yadav. Yadav said Anuj had earlier been involved in five cases of arms, burglary and dacoity and worked as a mechanic on contract. Kuldeep had previous involvements in 16 cases of Arms Act, snatching and robbery; police said he arranged pistols and cartridges for the robbery. Irfan used to work as a barber and Sumit used to work as a vegetable vendor. Even as several investigators were looking for the accused in the it was one of the alleged conspirators who was earlier found at who led the police to other accused.
