Arrested MLA Naresh Balyan is extortion victim, Amit Shah is shielding gangsters: Arvind Kejriwal; BJP hits back
AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal says Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Police were behind the attack on him as well as MLA Naresh Balyan’s arrest in an extortion case.

AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal defended Uttam Nagar MLA Naresh Balyan, who was arrested in an extortion case on Saturday, stating that he was a victim of extortion and had complained to Delhi Police a couple of years ago that gangster Kapil Sangwan had threatened to harm his family.
Addressing a press conference, the former chief minister also accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Police of being behind Saturday’s incident where a man threw a liquid at him during a padyatra. “The law and order situation is deteriorating in the national capital… I was quiet but could not control it anymore, so I raised the matter and sought action from Union Minister Amit Shah ji. But instead of taking action against these gangsters, he got me attacked and had one of the MLAs who filed a complaint against gangsters arrested,” alleged Kejriwal.
Balyan was arrested on a day that the BJP shared a purported audio clip of him speaking with gangsters about extortions.
Citing a complaint filed by Balyan, Kejriwal said, “This is one of the complaints filed by Balyan… There are multiple other FIRs and complaints. In his complaint, he clearly mentioned he has been receiving calls from gangsters for the last two years. Two years ago, he received such extortion calls from a gangster called Kapil Sangwan, also known as Nandu. He filed an FIR with the police, seeking help…”
Kejriwal said Balyan mentioned in his complaint to the Special Commissioner of Delhi Police that the gangster knew the address of his son, who was studying abroad, as well as the whereabouts of his other family members.
“He even told police in several complaints that gangster Sangwan is using his name to make extortion calls and extort money from businessmen and traders. But instead of taking action, Delhi Police got someone to attack me and arrested Balyan yesterday, as we raised this matter,” he said.
The AAP chief further said, “By doing all this, what kind of message is Union Minister Amit Shah sending to the people? He is sending a message that if you file a complaint against gangsters or raise these matters, you will be attacked and arrested.
Hitting back at the AAP, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva stated the incidents have exposed the “dark face of Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party”.
“A young man, whose job was lost due to administrative mistakes and negligence by Kejriwal’s government, tried to throw water on Kejriwal yesterday… instead of understanding the sentiments of the youth, Kejriwal labeled him an acid thrower and sought to portray him as a criminal… it looks like he is not only losing public support, he but also losing his political and mental balance as well,” he alleged.
