A 27-year-old woman from Mizoram, found in her flat in Munirka with deep stab wounds on her right leg, died of her injuries at a city hospital on Friday.

Vasant Vihar police have registered a case of murder but not ruled out suicide. They said they are investigating whether or not the wounds are self-inflicted. Many of the dead woman’s friends, who were in the house on Thursday night, are being questioned.

Police said in a statement that the woman from Aizawl, named Juliet, was brought dead to the Safdarjung Hospital around 11 pm on Thursday. She was working in a private company in Gurgaon and lived in a one-room rented flat in South Delhi’s Munirka.

A friend of Juliet’s, identified as Virendra Singh from Haldwani in Uttarakhand, brought her to the hospital, police said.

The family of the dead have been informed of the incident.  Sachin Rai, who lives in  the same building, said, “Virendra came to my house and said he needed help. My girlfriend and I went down to the third floor and saw that Juliet was lying in her bedroom in a pool of blood. She was unconscious. We took her to the hospital where she was declared brought dead.”

There were three other persons in the room at the time, Rai told Newsline. He said Virender told him that Juliet had been cooking noodles in the kitchen while he was in the living room. “Virender told me that when Juliet did not come out of the kitchen for a long time, he went inside and saw her bleeding from her legs. He said there was a blood-stained kitchen knife lying near her. She had a deep stab wound on her right thigh and was bleeding profusely.”

A call centre employee living in a first floor flat said around 8pm on Thursday, a police officer had knocked at his door and asked him if he knew Juliet.

Identifying himself as Danny Simte, he claimed, “I told the police officer that I did not know where Juliet was at that time. He took my details. I thought that some minor incident might have occurred upstairs and did not bother to check.”

He said he learned about the death only on Friday.

“I don’t know why the police officer came to my house hours before she was supposedly found injured in her kitchen.”

Deepak Mishra, Special Commissioner of Police (law and order, said, “The autopsy will be conducted by a medical board on Saturday. The report will throw light on the nature of injuries and help us investigate further.”
