Metro’s Nobel wall honours Satyarthi, other winners

The contributions of our Nobel laureates have given India recognition all over the world.

Days after social activist Kailash Satyarthi won the Nobel Peace Prize, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), along with the Embassy of Sweden, set up “The Nobel Memorial Wall” at Rajiv Chowk Metro station on Sunday.

Carrying photographs of not just Satyarthi but other Nobel laureates namely Mother Teresa, Rabindranath Tagore, CV Raman, Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and Hargobind Khorana, the exhibition is aimed at increasing awareness about them. The wall will be on display till November 1, a DMRC spokesperson said.

Inaugurating the exhibition, DMRC managing director Mangu Singh said, “It is a matter of pride for us to host the Nobel Memorial Wall with the Embassy of Sweden to honour our Nobel laureates. The contributions of our Nobel laureates have given India recognition all over the world. The Nobel Wall is a unique way to honour them. It also gives an opportunity to our youth to know about our Nobel laureates while they are on the move.”

Stating that the exhibition also marks the start of the Sweden India Nobel Memorial Week, Ambassador of Sweden to India Harald Sandberg said, “I would like to thank DMRC for partnering with us in this initiative where we pay a tribute to Indian Nobel laureates for their contribution to the world. We are extremely delighted to have an addition to the wall this year with a panel on Kailash Satyarthi, winner of the Peace Prize for 2014… Protection of the world’s children is absolutely central to the world co-creating its future.”

Set to take place across 10 cities in the country, the Sweden India Nobel Memorial Week is themed on “Sweden Made in India: Co-creating the Future” and gives special focus to Satyarthi.

“Last year the embassy was delighted to celebrate the centenary of Rabindranath Tagore’s Nobel Prize in Literature with the primary focus on works and life of Tagore. This year, it is going to be Kailash Satyarthi’s life story and his activism,” Sandberg said.
