Men dump body, flee crematorium

Workers at the cemetery alleged that five days ago, a similar kind of body was brought to them.

When East Delhi’s Ghazipur crematorium received a body around 5.30 on Monday evening, priests and workers engaged themselves in performing the last rites. However, they were taken aback when they saw the battered face of the body and rope marks on the neck.

When they asked what happened, the five people who brought the body did not give a “convincing” answer.

“We suspected foul play and called police. Immediately, the five men fled,” Rajan Mishra, the junior priest at the crematorium, said.

Mishra said he and five other workers ran behind the men. “After chasing them for half-an-hour, we were able to catch hold of three people with the help of passersby,” he added.

Police soon reached the cemetery but did not arrest anyone. One of the police officers said, “Initial investigation has revealed that the five people were from Ghaziabad. However, we haven’t arrested anyone as we are waiting for the autopsy report, which will be forwarded to the Ghaziabad police.”

Workers at the cemetery alleged that five days ago, a similar kind of body was brought to them.

It too had rope marks on the neck and those who brought the body pressured them to cremate it speedily, they said.

However, Mishra said, they called the PCR and police sent the body for an autopsy.

“Two days back, the same body was brought back to the cemetery and the one of the people accompanying them was handcuffed,” Mishra said.

Asked why the men who had been turned over had not been arrested, Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said, “There is a standard procedure and there has to be sufficient ground for arrests. We need to check facts and circumstances in totality. Only after an investigation, arrests are made.”
