The MCD Standing Committee has decided to give an additional Rs 1.5 crore to councillors for developmental activities in their areas for the current fiscal year.
Since the financial year ends on March 31,councillors have been asked to submit their estimates from February 14 onwards so that the money is not underutilised.
The money is in addition to the Rs 50 lakh that the councillors have already received this year. Committee chairperson Yogender Chandolia said Rs 5 lakh extra will be given to councillors to fix the streetlights in their wards. This takes the total amount given this fiscal to Rs 2.05 crore. The same amount has been estimated for next fiscal year as well.
Chandolia made the announcement on Monday after the Opposition disrupted the Budget meeting of the House on Friday, demanding immediate release of funds. Chandolia, who presented the Budget proposals for 2011-12 and the revised Budget estimates at a special meeting, said the funds has been allotted under different heads to avoid confrontation with the Delhi government.
After the MCD increased the councillors fund to Rs 2 crore earlier, the Delhi government had raised objections, saying that the fund for MLAs and municipal councillors cannot be the same. Under the current proposal,Rs 50 lakh will be given for improvement of roads in each ward. The allocation under other heads are sanitation services (Rs 25 lakh),maintenance work (Rs 75 lakh) and streetlighting in wards (Rs 5 lakh). Rs 50 lakh will be given to 100 councillors from unauthorised colonies.
