Four people from Manipur, including two women, were allegedly beaten up and assaulted by a group after the latter sought help from them to book a cab in Southeast Delhi late Thursday night.

According to DCP (Southeast) Rajesh Deo, they received a PCR call around 2.30 am on Saturday of a quarrel. “One person was beaten up and later shifted to a hospital by a PCR van,” he said.
The victim suffered an abrasion on his knees, his eyes were red and swollen, and there was swelling on the left side of his forehead, said police.

CCTV footage of the incident shows a group of people punching and kicking the complainant, his friend, and the two women even as one of them screams. The man later lodged a police complaint stating the incident took place on November 30 when he, his wife, and sister were on their way to drop a friend home.

Speaking to The Indian Express, the complainant said: “We were dropping our friend home on Thursday around 11 pm when a group of persons, including two men and a woman, approached us and claimed their battery was dead and they needed help to book a cab to Munirka.”

The complainant said when they agreed to help and were waiting for the ride to be confirmed, “the accused persons started passing lewd comments at them. When I objected to their behaviour, they became aggressive and started beating us mercilessly despite us pleading with them to stop… Soon, 8-9 people gathered and further assaulted us.”

The DCP said the assailants had called more people to the spot and within 2-3 minutes, the Manipuri people were surrounded by several others who started beating them up. Police registered an FIR against unidentified persons under IPC sections of causing hurt, rioting and outraging modesty of a woman.

The complainant and the accused are residents of Manipur. “The quarrel took place because both parties alleged the other insulted the women accompanying them. The victims belong to the Meitei community and the accused to the Poumai community… two women seen in the video have been examined,” said the DCP.
