Man held for hurling acid on woman found dead in lock-up

A day after he allegedly threw acid on a woman,22-year-old Lakhan was found hanging inside a cell at the Vijay Nagar police station on Saturday. He was rushed to hospital,where he died two hours later,police said.

According to senior police officers,Lakhan had been handed over to police by his family around 10 am on Saturday. Three hours later,the man was found hanging in the lock-up. He had used his shirt to make a noose and hung himself from the window grill,police said. Police had also detained Lakhan’s brother.

“Eight criminals had been detained at the police station and so we had kept him (Lakhan) in a separate cell. He was not under observation at that time (of the incident). He was found choking and was rushed to hospital,” a senior police officer said.

Lakhan died around 2 pm,nearly two hours after he was taken to the hospital.

Police claimed Lakhan had confessed to throwing acid on the woman. While a suicide note had not been recovered,officers claimed that Lakhan may have killed himself because of guilt.

On Friday morning,two men on a motorcycle had thrown acid on a 22-year-old woman at Crossings Republik in Ghaziabad. Police said the woman,who is married,had turned down his marriage proposal.

The woman suffered serious burn injuries.
