Man gets life in jail for rape, sodomy of eight-year-old girl

Court awarded Rs 2 lakh as compensation to the girl.

In June 2010, Anwar approached a mother of three claiming that he was working under the Ladli Yojana and he would procure clothes free of cost for her daughters on behalf of the government. He went away with the names of her daughters only to return in the evening when the mother was away. He lured the 8-year-old child saying he would take her to a studio for getting her passport-sized photograph clicked. The child was found raped near a temple the next morning.

Last week, the man was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and an additional term of seven years for unnatural sex. The court awarded a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the girl.
The victim testified before the court that the man had taken her to a park where he assaulted, raped and sodomised her. In the morning, he took her back to her colony in a bus. He left her near the bus stop threatening her against disclosing the incident to anyone.

The defence pointed out discrepancies in the statements of the victim and other prosecution witnesses to allege that Anwar had been falsely implicated in the case.

Additional Sessions Judge Illa Rawat said the discrepancies were minor and “did not tarnish the reliability and genuineness of the testimony of the child victim”.

The court also noted the fact that the testimony of the child was corroborated with the medical evidence on record.

On the strength of the prosecution evidence, the court convicted Anwar on charges of impersonation, kidnapping, criminal intimidation, rape and sodomy.

The prosecution had also pointed out that Anwar had earlier been convicted of sexual offences by Gurgaon court and was out on bail when he committed the present offence.

In light of his previous conduct and the brutality of the offence, Judge Rawat sentenced Anwar to life imprisonment.

The judge directed that after the life term, Anwar would also serve rigorous imprisonment for seven years on charges of sodomy.
