An hour into BJP’s chief ministerial candidate’s Kiran Bedi’s roadshow on Tuesday, the crowd was distracted by two familiar faces — that of Narendra Modi and Ramdev in a white Audi. As the car zipped through the streets of Timarpur, residents surrounded the Audi for photographs, giving a miss to Bedi’s jeep coming behind.

They were in for a surprise. ‘Modi’ turned out to be one Abhinandan Pathak, a 52-year-old physical education teacher at the RC Inter-College in Saharanpur, and ‘Ramdev’ was Sanjay, a 42-year-old mobile store owner from Mukherjee Nagar.

Even as Bedi’s caravan tried its level best to attract residents through sloganeering and music, most teemed around the lookalikes. The duo claimed that they have been campaigning for the BJP for the past year. “I am blessed to have features that resemble Modi’s and I think I am here for a reason. I believe I am Modi’s Lakshman and since he is busy running the country, I need to be around to help him. I was with him in Varanasi where I campaigned for him throughout. I am here to prove that the AAP is full of liars. They don’t deserve to be in power,” Pathak said as he posed for a selfie with a teenager.

Sanjay said, “I met Pathak in Haridwar last year. Both of us realised that our striking resemblance to the two men was for a reason. We decided to take it forward.”

Both claimed that they have been accompanying BJP candidates across the capital. “I campaigned in Maharashtra, Varanasi and Haryana and Sanjay has campaigned here in Delhi. I was asked to leave my college because I was devoting most of my time to campaign for Modiji,” Pathak said.

Although party leaders said they had not called either Pathak or Sanjay to campaign for them, Pathak, who is fondly known as ‘Nandan Modi’ said, “I usually travel on my cycle with my drum. But I met these people (residents who own the Audi) on the way, they offered me their car. I am doing this for Modiji and because he advocates the cause of women empowerment. I will serve him all my life.”

But has he met the man he claims to revere? “Yes,” Pathak said, “I met him on May 8 at Varanasi where I touched his feet and sought his blessings.”

While party leaders admitted that Sanjay had been an activist for the BJP in Mukherjee Nagar, they denied inviting Pathak for the campaign. “He is not part of our campaign. We don’t know who he is,” a party leader said.
