‘Long hair’ helps cops net rapist of 5-yr-old

Jugnu Singh would never have imagined that of all the things,he would land up in jail thanks to his long hair.

Jugnu Singh would never have imagined that of all the things,he would land up in jail thanks to his long hair. In fact, his hair style was the one clue that led the police team from Southeast Delhi to the 25-year-old who allegedly raped a five-year-old girl at the Pul Prehladpur Railway Colony on Friday afternoon. Cops arrested him from Bahadurgarh in Haryana a day after the crime.

Jugnu had left the girl screaming on the staircase of the Railway Colony. Soon,a passerby informed the Police Control Room about the incident. The police rushed the girl to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where the doctors admitted her to the ICU. The only description the girl could give of her tormentor was that he had long hair.

“We rounded up several men with long hair from the area and questioned them. But nothing conclusive came of it. Then we were told that another long-haired man in the colony had been missing since Friday. We immediately raided Jugnu’s residence and found some clothes, which were apparently worn during the time of the crime, tucked away under his cot. His parents said he had gone to their village in Bahadurgarh,” said a senior police official.

The police noticed some paint on the clothes, which reportedly matched with that of the staircase where the rape had taken place. On Saturday,a team went to Bahadurgarh and brought Jugnu to Delhi. Subjected to sustained interrogation,he broke down and confessed to the crime, said a police official.

“We have booked Jugnu for rape at the Pul Prehladpur police station. Further investigations are on,” a senior police official said. Jugnu’s father retired from a senior post in the Indian Railways and the family has been allotted a flat in the colony.

The police said that the girl is still recuperating at the AIIMS Trauma Centre where she is being treated for physical injuries as well as mental trauma.
