Taking part in Dussehra celebrations at the Ramlila ground in Red Fort, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Tuesday said they are trying to learn from Lord Ram and implement his teachings to ensure the city progresses. The CM was invited as the chief guest at the event organised by the Luv Kush Ramlila committee, one of the oldest in the city. Also at the event were Delhi L-G Vinai Kumar Saxena and Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut.

Addressing a large gathering, Kejriwal, who came along with other party workers and local MLA Parlad Singh Sawhney, said: “I wish everyone present here a very happy Dussehra and Diwali. I pray Lord Ram blesses you all with good health, happiness, fortune, and peace and fulfills all your wishes… We learn a lot from the teachings and sacrifices of Lord Ram every day… A night before his Rajya abhishek (coronation ceremony), Lord Ram was asked by his parents to go on vanvas, and without denying them, he respected their orders and left with a smile. I don’t think that anyone in today’s generation will adhere to something like this.”

He added, “Ram Chandra ji is our inspiration and Ram Rajya is a very big thing… we are trying to learn from his teachings and implement it in Delhi… We are trying to ensure no one sleeps on an empty stomach, everyone gets a good education, free health services, and 24-hour electricity and water… These are our pledges and we are focused on fulfilling them…”

Calling himself the younger brother and son of Delhiites, the CM said, “We work 24 hours for you, to resolve your problems. If I have missed anything, I apologise for that…”

Meanwhile, Ranaut set ablaze Ravana’s effigy at the Luv Kush Ramlila, becoming the first woman to do so in the 50-year history of the event. “In the 50-year history of the event held annually at the Red Fort, this is the first time that a woman has set the Ravana effigy on fire,” said Arjun Singh, president of Luv Kush Ramlila Committee of Delhi.

Across the city, senior leaders, from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President Droupadi Murmu, participated in celebrations. At the Shri Dharmik Leela Committee, the President also performed the ‘Ravan Dahan’. Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, along with J P Agarwal and other party leaders, attended Dussehra celebrations organised by the Nav Shri Dharmik Leela Committee.
