From labourers and gardeners to clerks and babus, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena will, in a series of events starting Thursday, hand over commendation letters to thousands of individuals for their role in ensuring a successful G20 Summit.

A luncheon meeting with around 4,000 people engaged by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) in G20-related duties, which ranged from fixing broken pavements and wrapping marigold garlands on tree trunks to monitoring live feeds and ironing out any glitches that surfaced, will be the first such event.

According to government sources, Saxena, apart from thanking them for their service, will hand over commendation letters to each individual. Over the coming days, officials said he will host similar events for thousands of others.

With around 2,000-4,000 individuals on the guest list at each event, sources added that similar thanksgiving meals will be organised for the Public Works Department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Environment Department officials as well as people engaged by them in various Summit-related initiatives over the coming days.

Delhi Police personnel will be part of one such event where they will be felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday. The L-G will be present as well.

Government sources said while the commendation letters would add more weight to the performance reviews of individuals from various government departments, these would hopefully prove beneficial to labourers and daily-wage workers in getting better work opportunities in future.

Dubbing them ‘Team Delhi’, Saxena had, at Raj Niwas on Tuesday, interacted with and expressed his gratitude to several senior government officials and members of the bureaucracy associated with the planning and execution of the Summit.
